PERIODONTAL SERVICES

PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE IS A PROGRESSIVE CONDITION THAT IS THE LEADING SOURCE OF ADULT TOOTH LOSS. THE SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE MAY PRESENT AS PUFFY RED AND BLEEDING GUMS BUT IN SOME CASES APPEAR WITHOUT SYMPTOMS AT ALL.

TREATMENTS FOCUSED ON KEEPING YOUR TEETH + SUPPORTING STRUCTURES HEALTHY

Periodontics is a highly specialized area of dentistry that treats the area “around” a tooth, including the gums, bone, and supporting ligaments. While modern dentistry has given us healthier, brighter, straighter smiles, a large percentage of Canadian adults still suffer from gum disease. A healthy-looking smile is often mistakenly equated with good overall oral health, but this is not always the case.

SIGNS, SYMPTOMS + THE CONNECTION

Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that hold the teeth.

There may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease may affect these systemic diseases. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.

Some signs and symptoms of periodontal disease are:

  • Red and puffy gums

  • Bleeding gums

  • Receding gums

  • New spacing between teeth

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Loose teeth

  • Tenderness or Discomfort of the gums

  • Pus around the teeth and gums

HEALTH MAINTENANCE + PREVENTION OF DISEASE

Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will help reduce the risk of developing periodontal disease.

CUSTOMIZED PERIODONTAL PROGRAMS

Bacteria that live in the plaque around the teeth and gums create irritation and infection which eventually if left untreated, cause bone loss of the jaw and the teeth begin to loosen. At Landmark Dental Centre, we provide optimum periodontal care through our customized periodontal programs created for the individual needs of the patient.

We provide 3-6 months scaling and root planing treatments with our highly skilled hygiene team and offer periodontal laser treatment, a leading edge technology.

LASER TREATMENT

The Kavo KEY3 laser treats periodontal issues ranging from bleeding gums to deep pockets around the teeth where infection-causing plaque and calculus (tartar) build-up. The Kavo KEY3 has the capacity to determine where the calculus is under the gum and where it needs to be removed. This conservative treatment allows quicker and virtually painless healing time. The laser also treats canker and cold sores.

We work in conjunction with our local periodontal specialists which mean your care is a team effort. This is just one more way that we’re trying to ensure that you have a healthy smile for a lifetime.
